i see it being raised more and more like this, but i genuinely don’t understand this point saying AI is “just a calculator” or “is just like next word prediction on your phone” is like saying a photograph is just a sketch a car is just a horse a vacuum is just a broom a washing machine is just a bucket a PC is just an abacus no one care if it’s capable of being sentient or not. a lot of productive work actually does not require sentience and many indeed be inhibited by it everyone cares how useful and capable it is in practice
