Researcher flows are the best leading indicator, IMO. Essentially, where the most economically mobile, cutting edge and well-informed people in AI are choosing to position themselves before AGI btw, this chart was made a year ago:

What would be externally visible signals that labs believe they have AGI? Some I can think of: increased physical security and restrictions (e.g. CEOs no longer leave the US), personnel management—implementing garden leave, stricter NDAs, etc—and compute reallocation towards the RSI loop.
"but that's not a direct indicator of AGI" well genius, where do you think they're getting the ultrasmart people to build the AGI. ... and you'd think you'd want this info before that happens ._.
