The convenience store industry is a great case for our generation to study the S-curve. Just a few years ago, the insane expansion where one store opened after another has now come to a halt, unable to catch its breath. The convenience store, which made a glamorous debut in the 1980s by pushing out mom-and-pop shops, has hit the wall of 'growth limits' after 40 years. Is this simply a recession? I don't think so. One store for every 900 people is nothing less than a declaration that there is no longer any land to plant flags. Ultimately, the S-curve of the industry splits into two paths at its peak: it either slowly fades away or draws a completely new curve. There’s a reason why convenience stores are suddenly selling clothes and bringing in cosmetics these days. The real study is how companies change their DNA at the end of the maturity phase and read that survival instinct. Convenience store companies are also looking for ways here and there.. But.. among the businesses of E-Mart, the convenience store was the only one that was growing.. can E-Mart win in the fight for market share?
